Ferndale, Washington: Far Away From It All – But Minutes From Everything

It seems almost impossible to comprehend, but it’s true; Ferndale, Washington, is one of Whatcom County’s least known communities. The town is, at once, a “get away from it all” old-fashioned bedroom community and, the center of all the action that puts all of Whatcom County (known as Bellingham for census purposes) on the national maps for livability, public safety and, above all, for recreational opportunity.

The Mt. Baker Ski Area, 55 miles from Ferndale, is a world’s record holder for snow in a season yet is close enough to “Away From It All Ferndale” to allow for a few early runs down the slopes, a round of golf midday, an early dinner and a play at Western Washington University. A long day; but great fun!

Ferndale and its immediate environs offer a broad range of housing opportunities both the newcomer to Whatcom County, and the long term resident, can appreciate. Just ten minutes away, Sandy Point offers a marina, golf course, home lots fronting either ocean or inlet, its own golf course and sweeping views. Ferndale’s own residential areas rise up from the heart of the town with many sweeping views of mountains, river and sound the usual rather than the exception. To the north, west, south and much of the east, Ferndale is bordered by farms and open space populated, during the winter months, by North America’s largest waterfowl, the Trumpeter Swan. Once endangered Trumpeter Swans are, today, plentiful throughout Whatcom County between late November and early March; they’re the original snowbirds!
